Are you passionate about helping new parents navigate the sometimes confusing and often rewarding journey of breastfeeding? Upon completion of the Lactation Educator training, you’ll be able to teach accurate, current, and consistent information about breastfeeding and lactation to expectant and new families. Content is based on current research as it applies to best practice issues in the clinical setting.

Course Details

A complete, in-person core program to begin practice in evidence-based breastfeeding and lactation care. This five-day course is essential education for any healthcare professional or individual who works with new mothers and their newborns, or as the beginning process for becoming a lactation consultant (IBCLC). The class provides you with the first 45 foundation hours for the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) certification exam. This course is designed for health care providers and lay people who want to provide accurate, current and consistent information about breastfeeding and lactation to expectant and new families. Content is based on current research as it applies to best practice issues in the clinical setting. In addition to attending all lectures, students complete a written study guide and outline a project of their choice. 

Completion of FBPLC provides a Lactation Educator Certificate. 

 

Our Foundations for Best Practice in Lactation Care training is a five-day course.

  • Common Questions about Nutrition During Lactation
  • Caring For Babies Who are Born Early: Breastfeeding the Preterm, Very Preterm Infant
  • Common Questions about Medications During Lactation
  • The Late Preterm and "Supposedly" Term Infant: Now Official "Early Term" Somewhere Between Term & Preterm Infants
  • Tools and Techniques of the Trade
  • Non-Infectious Mastitis: Engorgement, Plugged Ducts Chronic Inflammation
  • Safe Sleep and the Conflict with Biology and Culture
  • Growth and Development: 3-6 Months Old
  • Caring for the Infant with Hyperbilirubinemia: What Role Does Breastfeeding Play?

There is no required textbook for this course.

All cancellation, transfer, make-up, and refund requests must be received in writing via email.

Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellation requests made at least 30 calendar days before the first day of the workshop are eligible for a full refund, minus a $150 processing fee.
  • Cancellation requests made less than 30 calendar days before the start of the class are not eligible for a refund.

Transfer Policy

  • Transfer requests must be made at least 30 calendar days before the first day of the workshop and will incur a $100 processing fee.

Make-Up Policy:

  • Attendance for 100% of the course sessions is required.
  • No refunds are provided for no shows or missed portions of the course.
  • To obtain your certificate of completion, it is necessary for you to attend all sessions and successfully complete all assignments.
  • It may be possible to make-up missed sessions of the course with approval from the instructor and the Simkin Center Director, please note this option is not guaranteed.
  • Some sessions will require make-up attendance during a future Foundations for Best Practice in Lactation Care, please note that a $100 processing fee, plus $100 per makeup session will apply.
  • Make-up sessions must be completed within 9 months of your initial workshop.
  • If you have missed any sessions and need to explore your options for make-up, please contact us. We will be glad to assist you.

To be eligible for a refund or transfer, you must submit your request in writing via email, simkincenter@bastyr.edu, even if you initiate the process via Catalog.
