Perimenopause:
The 3 a.m. Wake-Up
What's actually happening in perimenopause, including the symptoms nobody warns you about
Tuesday, November 17 · 6:00–7:00 PMBastyr University Clinic, San Diego · Room U105
Free. Bring a friend; most people do.
Sound familiar?
You wake at 3 a.m. and your mind is already running. You're tired in a way rest doesn't fix. Things that never bothered you now make you snap. Your stomach has opinions it didn't used to have. Your tests came back normal, and you still don't feel like yourself. You may not have connected any of this to perimenopause. Most people don't.
In a 2026 study of more than 17,000 women, most expected hot flashes. What they actually reported most often was fatigue, irritability, low mood, trouble sleeping, digestive changes, and anxiety.
This workshop is an hour on what's going on, and why.
What we'll cover
- What perimenopause and menopause are, and how to tell where you might be in the transition
- The symptoms that rarely get mentioned: sleep, mood, energy, digestion, and focus
- Why "your labs are normal" doesn't always end the conversation
- What hormone testing can and can't tell you
- An overview of the options people consider, from everyday foundations to hormone therapy and non-hormonal approaches
- Twenty minutes for your questions
What to expect
An hour of plain-language education from clinicians who spend their days on this. There's no cost and no sales pitch. You'll leave knowing more than when you arrived, whether or not you ever visit our clinic.
Who it's for
Women in their late 30s, 40s, or 50s who's noticed changes and wants to understand them, whether or not you've used the word "perimenopause" yet. Partners, friends, and family who want to understand are welcome too.
Who's presenting

Dr. Alaina Totton, ND, a naturopathic resident at Bastyr University Clinic, draws on a background in psychology and social work to help patients understand what's driving their symptoms.
Our clinic is the teaching clinic of Bastyr University. Licensed clinicians supervise advanced student clinicians, and visits run a full hour.
Bring a friend
