Navigating tuition increases is a common experience across higher education institutions. At Bastyr University, the leadership team uses the summer months to prepare for the upcoming academic year. As we approach Fall 2024, marking the start of our fiscal year 2025 (FY25), part of this preparation involves setting tuition rates.

Each year, tuition rates at Bastyr are carefully reviewed and approved by the Bastyr University Board of Trustees. For FY25, the Board has approved increasing tuition and fees for some courses.  To help you better understand these changes, we’ve created resources to guide you through what to expect.

Tuition Management at Bastyr University

Tuition is a significant factor for many when considering higher education. Recognizing this, Bastyr University ensures that any changes are communicated clearly. The approved 4% tuition increase for FY25, effective from Fall 2024, remains below the national average for higher education.

Additionally, the Board has approved fees to cover essential hard costs. These costs include lab materials, learning resources, and guest speaker fees.

How Bastyr University Tuition Rates are Established

Tuition rates at Bastyr University are determined as part of the annual budget process. This process is led by the Bastyr University Department of Finance, which reviews past expenditures and works closely with university leaders to project costs for the coming year.

Budget projections are informed by expected expenditures, such as faculty and staff compensation—the largest single investment made by the university. Additional costs include campus maintenance, utilities, safety measures, goods and services, and accreditation and licensing fees.

The finance team ensures that all aspects are accounted for with accuracy. Once the budget is compiled and aligned with leadership expectations, it is presented to the Board of Trustees. The Board reviews the budget, asks questions, and provides input before giving final approval.

2024-25 Tuition Increase Averages & Bastyr's Position

According to U.S. News & World Report, the average tuition increase for universities in FY25, starting in Fall 2024, is 5%. Typically, universities, both public and private, increase tuition by 3% to 8% annually.

The Bastyr University Board of Trustees, along with its leadership and finance department, made a conscious effort to keep cost increases for students conservative. We understand the significant investment in education and strive to ensure that this investment positions our students for success today and in the future.
