4-Wheeling Incident at Campus

four-wheel damage to Bastyr campus

Published

Dear Students and Campus Community,

On the evening and into the night of Tuesday, December 20th, a small group of ATVs and trucks entered the Bastyr University campus without permission.  The drivers of the vehicles were asked to leave by campus security at approximately 6:45 p.m. Just before midnight, they returned and proceeded to drive through green spaces making significant noise and causing damage to property close to the Village, courtyard, greenhouse, and water tower. Fortunately, student property, including cars, was not damaged.

A big thank you, many of you reported this incident to campus security and local law enforcement. Your actions may have helped to prevent further damage and dissuade the return of the 4-wheel drivers. Your safety is our top concern, and we take this incident very seriously. President Byrd and I, along with campus security, are in communication with the Kenmore Police Department. Our legal team is also engaged, and we are collecting your input and documenting the damage to our campus and its fields. Any documentation you have, including videos and photos, is helpful and we would appreciate it if you would share them with us.

In the coming days, you may hear about this incident from the news media, via social media or from people talking around town. We want our surrounding community to know what happened. By sharing information, we hope to deter 4-wheel drivers from targeting our campus for off-road destruction, and instead choose to stay put. Your safety, and peace matter here. We respect you and your home with us. We will continue to pursue the people who damaged our campus, and work diligently to discourage others from doing the same.

Sincerely,

Susan L. Weider
